McGee notes, "the tea house is a place to quiet the mind and to create a sense of well being and awareness. Simplicity, beauty and dignity are the aspects of the tea ceremony. Awareness of natural cycles and seeing the 'perfect and imperfect' aspects of innate beauty found in nature, are characteristics of the wabi-sabi approach to creating, and associated with the tea ceremony." These concepts form the basis of McGee's work. He incorporates natural botanical materials with copper by using the plants to etch images into the metal. When he was sought for the commission for the tea house in New England, McGee exclaimed, "you have hit my aesthetic nail on the head". The first two of the current series now hang in the Connecticut tea house.
